Frequently
Asked Questions

The major methods include:

Fluorescent Leak Detection
Uses an ultraviolet (UV) or blue light inspection lamp and fluorescent dyes to find even the smallest leaks quickly and easily. It can locate multiple leaks—including those missed by other methods—and is the only preventive maintenance technique that detects all refrigerant and fluid leaks.

Visual Inspection
A slow, labor-intensive method that often relies on spotting colored fluids (e.g., red for transmission fluid, green for coolant). It’s difficult to pinpoint exact sources and cannot detect clear liquids or evaporating refrigerants.

Soapy Water and Bubble Solutions
An inexpensive but limited method used only for refrigerant leaks. It’s time-consuming and not suitable for oil, hydraulics, transmission, or fuel systems.

Talcum Powder
Spraying powder near a suspected leak may help identify oil leaks, but it can cause a mess and damage carburetors. Only for oil leaks.

Ion Detector (“Sniffer”)
Detects only the general area of a refrigerant leak and performs poorly in humid conditions. Fragile and not suitable for heavy-duty use.

Compressed Air
Used in water-cooling systems but risky—it can damage hoses and components or enlarge existing leaks. Only for coolant leaks.

Tracerline UV fluorescent leak detection uses inspection flashlights and fluorescent dyes to easily pinpoint hard-to-find leaks in minutes. It works in any circulatory system, including:

    • Refrigerant

    • Oil

    • Coolant

    • Fuel

    • ATF

    • Power steering

    • Hydraulics

    • Auto body water leaks

⚠️ Note: Not for brake systems.

  1. ADD the appropriate dye to the suspect system and run it to circulate the dye.

  2. INSPECT the system with a Tracerline leak detection flashlight, any leaks will glow brightly.

  3. CLEAN the repaired area with GLO-AWAY™ Plus dye cleaner.

  4. RUN the system again.

  5. REINSPECT the area, if no glow appears, all leaks are repaired.

Yes. Tracerline dyes are co-solvent free and completely safe when used as directed in OEM-grade systems.

No. Tracerline dyes never need to be removed. In fact, they are designed to stay in the system so you can easily recheck the repair and find future leaks.

Tracer Products provides a wide range of leak detection kits, lamps, dyes, and accessories to meet any diagnostic need.

Yes. Tracerline leak detection is used by major U.S. and foreign car manufacturers in their quality-control programs. Tracerline dyes are approved by Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo, Opel, Jaguar, Hyundai, and other major vehicle manufacturers.

Yes! Finding leaks, especially those that were not located by other shops, builds customer satisfaction, enhances your credibility, reduces labor costs, and helps avoid no-charge reworks. Being able to show customers their leaks makes it easy to get the repair order.

It’s usually very fast! In fact, many technicians report that they recovered the cost of their leak detection kit on their very first repair.

Although others have tried to imitate the Tracerline fluorescent leak detection method that Spectronics Corporation (Tracer Products’ parent company) invented in 1955, Tracer Products remain superior in many ways:

  • Higher-intensity Tracerline inspection lamps provide more power, greater ease of use, and better value.

  • Tracerline lamps are built tougher to withstand hard, round-the-clock use.

  • Tracer Products manufactures and services their own products.

  • Tracer Products offers the widest selection of fluorescent dyes to find the broadest range of leaks.

  • Tracer Products provides the best technical support.

  • Fluoro-Lite® dyes have been extensively tested and are used and approved by major vehicle manufacturers worldwide.

  • Tracerline fluorescent dyes are proven in over 350 million vehicles.

The Tracer Wafer™ is a factory-installed fluorescent dye wafer used by major vehicle manufacturers for OEM A/C system leak detection. Once installed in the receiver/drier or accumulator during production, it continuously releases a precise amount of dye into the refrigerant system for the vehicle’s lifetime. This allows technicians to easily identify leaks with a Tracerline® UV inspection lamp—no additional dye injection required.

Yes. Tracer Products also offers LeakFinder®, a full line of professional-grade fluorescent leak detection products designed specifically for the aftermarket. LeakFinder kits, dyes, and lamps provide the same reliability and performance trusted in OEM applications, tailored for everyday service and repair shops.
